You’re quite a young band but the maturity shines through due to experiences in earlier bands and projects. Is it fair to say that Error: Success is the “best of” of your previous work?

In a way you can say that all the earlier experience has landed in this project. But it’s a bit early to come out with any kind of “best of”, there are no signs of our creative force deteriorating- a lot more is coming. It would be correct to say “best so far”, but let’s leave the best ofs to be assessed by music scientists in 70 years.

Where did you find a vocalist with such a strong/evil voice? It’s not easy to find female singers with rough vocals like that.

The vocalist found us. Some time a go when I was trying to put the band together, she grabbed my sleeve at some event and said: “Hey, you were looking for someone to make music with. Here I am.” So that’s how it happened.

I tried to work with several people but I didn’t connect with most people or the problem was a lack of interest. What I value in Birgit aside from her vocal abilities is her commitment to the band. From the start she has been a defining part of the band and without her work we probably wouldn’t be on stage right now. Also she writes all the lyrics.

How has the public received your first digital EP?

The feedback has been positive. Especially we’ve had praise over how the record tells a story. It was semi deliberate; the songs are on similar topics. Not sure how it formed a consistent story, but that’s how it worked out. The EP has been downloaded from various sources thousands of times and broadcasted on radios. We haven’t advertised the material much, but life shows that good music advertises itself if you make it available.

Have any labels shown interest yet?

Not yet. But to be honest there are only a few labels I’m interested in. Music is meant to be listened, making money off it is secondary. But it seems as many smaller labels (due to circumstances) are concentrating on just that by making music unavailable. Downloads are removed from the internet and takedown messages are sent to YouTube so no one could listen to it for free. It’s a major problem with alternative bands that need to be delved in to, to be understood. A 30 second clip is not enough to do that. You need to listen to the whole album and then listen to it again. Luckily there are some labels who offer that. These are the labels whose music I buy and am interested in working with.

I remember with an earlier project even the programs for making music were made by yourself. How are things now?

To an extent it’s true to this day. I use Renoise and I’m on the development team of the software. As an alpha tester though, which means I use the software as usual just newer versions of it and it happens to eat my days work I write an angry comment about it on the Renoise development forum.

The software I built is left unfinished. The frame I was building it on had constrictions around which it was too difficult to work and due to lack of time I stopped working on it. Luckily we live in a wonderful time of electronics where everyone can find great reasonably priced software to make ruckus with.

You’re a great metal connoisseur. Are guitars closer to the heart then dark-electro?

My musical taste has been very wide for some time now. It varies from chillout ambient to black metal and breakcore. There are styles that don’t interest me much but it depends on the specific artist. There are good things in every genre. I can’t listen to guitar-music for too long though, I need some change. For me a guitar is a great instrument, but not a cult object. There are other sounds I’d like to enjoy too. What’s closest to the heart most likely varies with the state of the stars. At the moment monotonous retro sci-fi themed electro is caressing my ears. There is something enchanting in the repetetive analogue synth lines that with vocodered lyrics paint a picture of scientists with horn-rimmed glasses and coats operating an AI the size of a house.

Who do you want to see the most out of the BMB lineup?

Millimetric, for sure. The past few weeks I’ve been working through his material and I have to say he’s a genius. Who thinks it’s easy to make minimal music is gravely mistaken. It’s much easier to stack up a bunch of sounds, smear them around and turn up the volume. But to create a track where you can hear every sound, everything has to be thought trough and mixed right for it to work. Must say, Millimetric is good at that.

When are you planning to come out with something new?

There are no certain plans for a release at the moment. We’re making new music and recording it in the process. When there’s a sufficient amount, we’ll make a release probably. I don’t feel the urge to “work on an album”. Our primary goal is to make good music and people who are interested will hear it.

What can the BMB public expect from you?

A really great concert. We’ll do our best to give BMB as strong of a start as its finish is. What’s in store exactly, you’ve got to come and see. Let’s say that if you’re hoping for something a little more than just music, you won’t be disappointed.
